Cathays Community Centre Development                                                           Update January 2017

CCYCP are constantly striving to raise funds for development of both the organisation and the physical space at Cathays Community Centre, and to ensure the long-term sustainability of the project.

As stated in our constitution, we aim to ‘advance education and to provide facilities in the interest of social welfare for recreation and leisure time occupation with the object of improving the lives of inhabitants’. Land and buildings are leased from Cardiff Council, with whom we have a close working relationship.

Promotions/ Publicity

Short Term – New signage will be bi-lingual where possible.

Medium Term –Signage will be improved throughout the building. Improve the image and use of the Centre within the local community through developing new projects.

Long Term – The physical appearance of the building will be improved, and become more recognisable. Various funding options are being explored.

Bingo Hall

Short Term – We are working with Cardiff Council to try and secure funding for roof repairs and other repairs to the  ‘Bingo Hall’ part of the building.

Medium Term – A development plan for the whole site including the Bingo Hall is being worked on, with the aim of developing the site in stages. A bid is being developed for dedicated youth music space.

Long Term – As funding for each stage is successfully secured, the available space at Cathays Community Centre will be improved and expanded.

Our 21 solar panels continue to generate energy and funds for the project (information here).

Short Term – An updated energy audit is now available.

Medium Term – Energy consumption will continue to be monitored.

Long Term – Plans will include the harvesting of rainwater. Once we have a better understanding of repairs needed to strengthen the roof, the solar energy system can be extended, with the possibility of creating a ‘Community Energy Co-operative’. Funding is needed to install shower facilities on site, which would make use of water from the roof.

Short Term – Weeding, watering, mowing and picking up litter are on-going tasks for the garden while a group of regular volunteers is sought. Please get in touch if you can help with these tasks!
Medium Term – Developing some space for use as a workshop is being looked into – as always we need some funds!

Long Term – A volunteer to oversee garden maintenance and development is needed to ensure it’s a space that can be used by the whole community. If you’re interested please get in touch by coming in to the Centre, emailing or phoning 02920 373 144.
